This is one of the last true loggers in the U.S. The St Maries River
Railroad (St Maries, Idaho). They still use a caboose to protect the loads
on the downriver transfer of 50+ cars of logs on each trip. Here at
Clarkia, Id., the logs are sorted and loaded on the old Milwaukee Road Log
Flats, most of which still have friction bearings and are restricted (R-age)
to the St Maries system. From Clarkia they are hauled down the St Maries
River to the Potlatch Mill in St Maries. The railroad is owned by Potlatch
(PFI). This trackage was originally a branchline of the Milwaukee Road that
ran from Elk River, through Bovill and north to St Maries. This is the
operational caboose used now (ex BN). For years they used a MILW bay window
(1943) caboose. I believe that is now repainted in its original MILW colors
and in a display in the Spokane (WA) area someplace?
