As Bruce Butler points out, UP kept the MILW yard and tore out the UP yard. Between Havana Street and Fancher Road, the UP yard stretched along the north side of Sprague Avenue. The slightly slimmer MILW yard sat directly along the north side of the UP yard. This proximity made sense because MILW and UP used a bit of each other's trackage on either side of Spokane. Most of the former UP yard property is now occupied by stores and parking lots.

Because it's now owned by UP and fulfills the same basic role as its abandoned UP counterpart, the ex-MILW yard is referred to as "the UP Yard" by BNSF and UP. A UP movement asking to be lined for the UP Yard will use a connection on the south side of BNSF at Napa Street. UP movements (and even an occasional BNSF local) asking to be lined for the SI or the SI Yard will use a connection on the north side of BNSF at Napa Street.

What's left of the SI Yard, located mainly southeast of the intersection of Mission Ave. and Freya St., is a handful of tracks used mainly for storage and locals doing runarounds. No room here for meeting or staging through trains. UP's small facility at Trentwood, east of Spokane (north by timetable), has several industries, as well as a passing siding long enough for most trains to meet.

It's worth noting that when UP inherited the former MILW Spokane Yard, it also inherited the adjacent ex-MILW automobile unloading facility. MHKSK still brings loaded autoracks into town, though the number of such cars on inbound trains is currently down compared with previous years.
