On the last night of Key Bridge trains in 1958 the Northern California RR Club had its monthly meeting on one of the trains in the Bridge Yard and then took it over the system for a last ride. Each train carried a conductor's kit with flags and torpedos. On the inbound trip over the F Shattuck Ave line, the Northbrae Tunnel inbound track was lined with topedos during the layover at the nearby end of the line. The crew, as I recall, were warned in advance. Between the sound, flashes and smoke it sounded like a battlefield in the tunnel. The Berkeley Police caught up with the train a few blocks from the tunnel portal and everyone wondered who could have done that.
