Imagine the communications string. Fireman calls his/her dispatcher with the details and requests that UP be contacted. The 800 number is located, dialed, waited to answer, The caller IDs' who they are and what is going on. The person in Omaha then has to pass this info on to the dispatcher involved and relay what they were told. The dispatcher then has to figure out where the incident is and what trains may be close to that location and contact them. This could take almost 15-20 minutes, and we hope is accurate in its information. As an amateur radio operator I have participated in several drills involving emergency traffic handling . What goes in is not necessarily what comes out at the other end after going through as few as three people. There has to be a better way.
