Contrary to popular belief, Costner does not own or lease the Chadron roundhouse. Nebkota uses the smaller portion and the larger portion is or was leased by Cougar systems. The entire yard and all facilities are owned by DM&E. Most of the yard space is used to store unneeded railcars, mostly coal hoppers and tank cars. NRI loads 25 car grain shuttles that DM&E moves to Rapid City for points east. Power for the NRI is the two former SP SD9E's and a GP7 painted in a C&NW scheme, they run to Crawford on an as needed basis.

Incedently, the Chadron yard and roundhouse would make an excellent candidate for a museum. Much of the facilities remain basically as they were in the 1980's. There is a large yard and complete engine facilities along with a covered open air car shop. The main drawback is the areas remoteness.
