Thanks for the many vintage photos you've been submitting, Roger. My 14-year old son saw this latest pair and immediately said, "Dorsey Trestle." He recently downloaded a route for MS Train Simulator that includes both St. Paul Pass and Lookout Pass. Not that he hasn't seen the real Lookout Pass before; we drive over it all the time, and have driven the abandoned grade at least once. I often wonder why Lookout never achieved more widespread recognition among railroading's other passes and feats of engineering. Perhaps because of the obscure location, or the fact that it quit operating in, what, 1980? Not to mention that much of the pass was hidden from view of the general public by dense forest, except for the period immediately after construction when the mountainsides were largely barren of timber, and again after the 1910 fire. But one look at a topo map showing all those reversing loops on both slopes and consideration of those 4 percent grades, and you know it was one heck of a mountain to cross. It didn't have quite as many wood trestles as the Camas Prairie, but Lookout's large S-shaped trestle on the west slope was every bit the jaw-dropping landmark as Halfmoon Trestle on the CSP. Thank goodness we had Phil Hastings, Ron Nixon, and a handful of other guys before and since, to document this Grade A mountain pass.
