Hi Tom,
There's never been 90 freight trains per day, not even in a good economy. The current average is about 25 per day, down from 35 to 40 a couple years back. Metrolink and Amtrak are the same, with close to 50 trains on weekdays.

You might be interested in Metrolink's weekend service. This is new since your last visit. A roundtrip fare to Los Angeles is less than $10 on weekends.
