I'm sending Jim an email, but I thought others might be interested--
I found a picture of the torpedo he described on page 103 of the book, "The Railroad Caboose" by William Knapke. Apparently, this design dates from 1874. I would strongly caution anyone encountering a torpedo to be extremely careful (better yet, avoid them completely) because they hold considerable explosive potential, and old ones might be quite unstable. I remember a TV talk show years ago that had a guest who had become a successful private investigator despite losing BOTH hands as a child due to playing with some torpedoes he found.
