I truly believe that if the Eureka extension had been delayed by the First World War or if the automobile had come on a few years earlier the line never would have been built.

I base this opinion on the fact that just prior to the Great War there was quite a bit of public agitation for NWP extensions to Lake County and the like. By the 20's the automobile was king and interest in railroad projects had died out.
