Re: Schedules and main track authority

By "real schedule" I was referring to a timetable schedule that gave a train authority to occupy the main track subject to right, class and direction. Current typical freight or passenger schedules don't give a train any authority, and the only substantial rule is that a passenger train is not to leave a station ahead of its scheduled leaving time.

As you stated in another post, SP apparently dropped train order and timetable schedules in favor of DTC for dark territory in 1985. Before that, I remember seeing a timetable for the Modoc that showed three trains scheduled in the same direction eight hours apart. It is obvious that the dispatcher would modify any of the three scheduled trains to run late, as sections or be annuled as needed; with opposing trains all operated as extras. I think the WP HiLine had a similiar schedule at one time.
