The main problem with the Cascade tunnel is the 1.57% eastward grade. The MILW tunnel under Snoqualmie pass has just enough grade to provide drainage. The Trains article mentioned that the GN considered longer bores. These would have been closer to level. The west portal was fixed at Scenic where the old line doubled back. The question was where to locate the east portal.
