Amtrak's track record on buying new passenger cars is not good. The original Superliner order did not include lounge cars. The food service California cars are OK for a short distance but longer trips would require a true lounge. What Amtrak's planners do not get is that one of the primary attractions of train travel is the ability to get up and move around. For this you need a destination and that is not a walk-up snack bar. To attract riders any equipment purchase must include dedicated diners, lounges and diner-lounges.
