This day in Railroad History
January 26, 1921
A head-on collision occurred at Abermule, Montgomeryshire, Wales, killing 17 people on the Cambrian Railway. The crash arose from misunderstandings between staff which effectively over-rode the safe operation of the Electric Train Tablet system protecting the single line. A train departed carrying the wrong tablet for the section it was entering and collided with a train coming the other way. Among the dead was Lord Herbert Vane-Tempest, a director of the Cambrian Railways. The obvious cause of the Abermule collision was the unauthorised working of the tablet machines by anyone who happened to be around, and the failure of the staff at Abermule to notify each other of their actions. The slack working practices had been allowed to develop over several years by Stationmaster Parry and Signalman Jones.

Photo of the Day

This was taken in the very last days that any trains stopped at the Southern Pacific 16th Street Depot in Oakland, CA. About 3/4 of a mile from Mile Post Zero of their railroad! I have August 13, 1994 on the transparency, but I also took a shot of the Amtrak notice to passengers saying that July 17th would be the last train.
So perhaps the date on this should be July 13th. It was taken from the Interlocking tower adjacent to the depot and shows the old elevated SP red car platforms on top of the train shed where the inter urban trains used to pick up and drop off passengers.
