Actually, I have no real knowledge as to why. I'd suspect a combination of heavy train and no diesel power available. They sometimes used "mountain" types on here as well. I'll eventually get one of those images uploaded.

NP also used both steam and diesel power on the Seattle- Portland trains 407 & 408 into the early 50's. These would have been Northerns of the A class, or the 2626, otherwise known as the Timken.
