When I was in the San Diego area on a Red Cross assignment back in November 2003, there was also freight service on the Orange Line out to El Cajon (like the Blue Line down to the border, running at night after the close of light rail operations).

I recall seeing an ex-UP roadswitcher kept out at El Cajon in the industrial park north of I-8, where we had one of our Red Cross warehouses set up. This was along the stretch of line between El Cajon and Santee.

It may still operate. If you live in the area, it's probably worth a look.
