Shell press release

Shell Oil & Virent Energy Systems announced start up of a demonstration plant in Madison, WI that will produce new biogasoline using a variety of plant-based feedstocks. The initial feedstock will be ... sugar beets.

The process converts plant sugars directly into a gasoline product, instead of ethanol, and can be easily shipped without concern for pipeline or tank corrosion. The biogasoline contains a higher energy content than ethanol, and can be concentrated for use as motor fuel for standard gasoline engines.

Maybe, in 100 years (+ or -), we'll see sugar beet processing and beet trains in California.
For fuel instead of sugar.
