Regarding gyralights, mars lights.
As one who followed gyralights (aka Marslights)around for forty-two years (from the R side of the cab) after a while the thrill dissapates. Particularly in a blinding snow storm (or driving hard rain storm) and the train coming at you, its mars light is stuck "right in your face."
Worse yet, you'r grinding up the canyon the last (and the longest 25 miles) to Dunsmuir CA and the rotating light is bouncing off the canyon walls creataing one bee-jesus of a eyeball drawing distraction for final 60-70 minutes or so of a 12 hour trip.
Enough grump of the (so-called) good old days
Rarely were the lights aimed so it swept the track is wass very often out of alignment so that it wsa to the far right or left or pointing upwards serving no really decent purpose `cept it looked good in a photograph.
`Nuff said here, Gary
