This Sulzer repowered UP SD45 was shot at Summit in Cajon Pass, CA on a trip in the early 80's (likely 1982) to Eagle Mountain. It is a pure luck shot of UP Sulzer 60 on the point of this train at Summit. The train just happened to go by when we were there. The man getting off is a (surprise) mechanic. Since it is downhill from here it is not so important that the unit work from this point on.
This photo (by Ken Compton) shows that Vega wagons do NOT make the best train chasing vehicles, especially when you mistake a desert wash for a road. This is not far from Desert Center, CA. Then four year old Jeff Sloan is telling the driver of the four wheel drive how we happened to get stuck up a wash.
We had actually flagged the returning Kaiser Ore Train down and they called a tow truck to come get us. The crew said it happens quite a bit. But, the tow truck wouldn't go past the end of the road. The guys in the 4WD were from the county. They told us they go up the adjacent dirt road once a month to "see what is up there." It just happened to be on our day!
