The incident in question happened sometime in the 1980 - 1982 time frame. The dirt road leading South from I - 15 to Afton Campground had a sandspit drift across it. I was leading in my Chevy Pickup one moonlit evening; upon seeing the sand I simply gunned it & made it through. My buddy Dave, driving my dad's Dodge motorhome pulling a trailer w / motorcycles, saw the sand & slowed down. The sand won. My dad, somewhat less than sober, tried rocking the motorhome out, which only resulted in burning out reverse. ( You can hurt a Torqueflite after all.) After unhooking the trailer & using the ramps for planks we freed the beast. We still finished our trip, which included driving to Las Vegas & returning to Orange County, all without backing up !!! Good thing I was driving ahead as a scout.
