Okay, I read that brief explanation of vaccum brakes.

It sounds like someone should have closed an angle-cock to keep the brake line depleted of air and the brakes applied. Maybe they did. And, after 45 minutes, maybe the vacuum started to dissipate due to small leaks.

It sounds like a vacuum brake system could have the same vulnerabilities (i.e., pressure changes that can cause equipment to start rolling) as the system that was designed by George Westinghouse.
