Marty, here's a quick answer to the elevated deck service at 16th Street.
Built to separate interurbans from the steam lines, the upper deck served the Berkeley routes of the SP electrics until 1939. Those electric trains operated between the Oakland Pier and Berkeley (various routes) and a passenger stop was made at 16th Street station on the upper level.
Beginning in 1939 the SP electric trains were routed directly to San Francisco across the Bay Bridge. At that point, electric train service to the Oakland Pier was discontinued. At that point the Berkeley lines no longer served 16th Street, instead accessing new track and a flyover to reach the Bay Bridge via Bridge Yard and San Francisco.
Now the Seventh Street (Dutton Ave.) and Alameda routes were the electric lines that stopped at 16th Street as they operated between San Francisco and their East Bay terminals.
In 1941 all were discontinued. To this day, the Berkeley half of the flyover remains in place and is used by the OTR.H
