In the mid '50s, when I was just a little boy, I spent the weekends with my grandparents a lot. That log train ran through their back yard, in Longview. Day and night, those long trains, with many one-log loaded cars, came by, shaking the old house, and causing me to jump up and run out to the tracks. The train crew knew me, and would toot the whistle for me. One day the train was stopped out there for some reason, and my grandpa asked the crew to put me up in the cab. They let me sit in the engineers' seat and pull the whistle cord! I was 7 years old, but it seems like yesterday, the scene is so vivid in my mind.
