I've enjoyed several steam chases, I think the most memorable was a 4449 chase from LA to Santa Barbara. I don't remember the exact trip, since 4449 has taken a few, but I think it was in about 1979. Watched 2 chasers get into a fender bender after 4449 had gone by as they were getting back onto US 101. They stopped for a brief second, said to each other 'I'll get your insurance info when we get to Santa Barbara' and both jumped back into their cars to continue the chase.
As for some non-big event chases, back in the late 1980's when I lived in American Fork, Utah I used to pick up Amtrak #6 around Provo and chase it up Soldiers Summit, sometimes all the way to Helper, once a month or so during the spring and summer, especially if it was running late. This was in the days of F40's with the striped paint scheme. It also was when through cars from both the Desert Wind and Pioneer were added in Salt Lake, so #6 usually had 3 units and about 15 cars, made for some nice photos and video.
