The last three retired SP steam locomotives at West Oakland were 0-6-0s SP1272 and SP1298, and 4-6-2 SP2467. I took some slides of them there back in 1960.

Taking a stab at the last steam powered commute I'll say it was 4-8-4 SP4430 on Train 146 from San Francisco at 5:14 PM.
