Having worked in the media for 49 years, I think I can give some insight.
The old example is given: Dog bites man...not news. Man bites dog...news. To you, John, who observed the derailment, it is indeed "news", but in that sparsely occupied area, it's not news to many people. Did you check a local or regional paper a day or two later? I would imagine it might have been reported there.
I've done my share of traveling in Northern California yet I have no idea where Lime is located. Had it happened in a better known, more populated area, and houses were destroyed such as in the Cajon Pass derailment, it would have been covered.
The media is not biased. They just want to publish things that will sell their newspapers.
