Look for an updated P42 design - as that was what MBTA wants. MBTA was also insisting that any electronic spare parts had to be available for a substantial amount of time, leaving any custom systems out. Rumor had it these were getting GE's Jenbacher engines, but the press release suggests they are Evos (unless GE has rebranded Jenbachers into the Evo line?) These are a small custom build order, and GE seems to have gotten away from that.
MPI and CAT's relationship had soured, so MPI turned primarily to Cummins instead. Now that CAT (through Progress Rail) owns EMD, expect them to shy away from buying directly from EMD. This probably means that the MP40 model using the 710 and EM2000 computer is a dead model. There are plenty of vendors (including GE) selling EMD OEM or compatible parts (including new 645 engines), so MPI can still offer the MP36 which used the 645 and Wabtec's Q-Tron computer. MPI hasn't been thrilled with their gen-set production, so these models may be also a dead end.
NRE is still independent and family owned, though the grapevine says their founder may have just passed away.
