I thought they stopped using them because of maintenance, speed, and flexibility to drive on roads, etc.

Maintenance, they were getting old. More maintenance when things get old.

Speed and flexibility, being able to park it in a parking lot, vs on rails. The ability to return home at much faster speeds on the road, vs rail. The ability to get off the rail, at any road crossing.
