It would seem that SMART's FRA problems could be mostly dealt with by going to loco-hauled, as has been suggested by many locals.

My own suggestion, for what it is worth and with full knowledge that it is far from perfect, is to put SMART in suspension mode and get NCRA-NWP freight rail up and running ASAP. Let's see what it can do.

The plan to run SMART initially only as far as San Rafael is, imho, patently idiotic and a certain path to failure. The lions share of Northbay transit traffic south is to San Francisco.

Stainless steel BART cars would look so much better but I dunno about the impact of more weight on BART's serious noise and corrugation issues.
