I could guess that you were referring to the UMWA, but I really wasn't sure.
But since you were referring to the UMWA, I dispute your previous statement that it was the first "real" union. The Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers was formed in 1876, 14 years before the UMWA was formed. I think there were several other solid labor unions which were active prior to 1890 such as the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers & Trainmen which was formed in 1863.
