Trainnews.org is a viable alternative to a defunct Altamont Discussion board (as of January 1).

The is NO fee, there are NO ads, and only one forum, just like AP. The visual layout is similar, but not identical. No logins are required to view posts, or respond to existing threads. It is true that to create a new thread, you must register, however, you can use an email address that is not your primary email address (in other words a "disposable" email address. There is no need to use an email address that you would monitor in the future.

If you do choose to register, you get the ability to edit your posts, and you can post up to 3 photos directly as attachments to each post (This is similar to TO). Just be sure your photo size is appropriate to make this work smoothly. If you make the width no more than 900 pixels it should work fine. This is much simpler than setting up an account on a hosting site, and then linking. Of course, you can also link to a photo hosting site, if you choose, just like you are required to do at AP.

If you read David Curlee's comments in older threads, he is pretty clear that he is not interested in selling discussion board separately from the Timetable business. Unless there is some last minute white knight rushing out of the darkness to buy AP as a whole, the board is going away when AP shuts down.

However, it appears that David is amenable to providing copies of the AP forum database backups to the Trainnews.org board. This would facilitate offering the AP archives online at Trainnews. Note that this hasn't been tested yet, as far as I know, so there is the possibility of technical obstacles to a successful outcome.
