Ahhh the days when (as a very young boy) I got to witness a train above Placerville, taking empty cars up to the mill at Camino, with a dusting of snow on the roadbed.

Sorry, I know this doesn't answer your question, but it did bring back great memories. I believe this is one of the oldest California shortline routes -- "Camino, Placerville, & Lake Tahoe" IIRC. Must have been some ambitious folks to dream of getting over Echo Summit.

Don't know the status of the branch below Folsom as I now live in Southern California.

Now just another bit of SP history.
