Is that why they spent all that money on legal battles involving Rochester's Mayo Clinic, and their infamous (and silly) opposition. And also the eminent domain battles on the west end; which got a whole lot of farmers in a big uproar.
Yep - a lot of money got spent on something they didn't really intend on doing.
Actually, it was investor uncertainty in the outcomes of those legal battles and the threat of festering opposition by every tom dick and harry environmental group, that killed it. Almost certainly, its opposition would have trumped up those environmental issues and those groups would have jumped right in, just like the "Useful Idiots" most of them are. And potential investors knew it.
It was not its own merits or lack of same, that killed it. It was this "political" uncertainly felt by all investors. The days of such grandiose adventures by private industry are in the past. They died fairly early in the 20th century.
