The diesel engine went to "fast idle" in this position, the loading was the same as in switching 1, although since the engine was already at "fast idle", the locomotive loaded up a lot more quickly. If your really wanted to kick cars, you opened the throttle in switching 2, and promptly flipped the switch to forestalling, which loaded the engine a little more than in 1 or 2. By doing this you could get moving so quickly with a light engine that if a switchman standing by the front step when you started moving didn't get on that step, the locomotive would be going too fast for him to get on the rear step (this was in the days before sissy railroading). The only other switch engines that I know of which could do this were the 2300s (F-M switchers), provided you pressed the high power button beforehand.
