Neither the CNS&M,or the CA&E, used pantographs. The North Shore had double trolley poles on several of the freight locomotives,while the CA&E ran their locomotives in pairs.

There sometimes are short stretches of double wire to provide a section gap so that a section of the overhead can be taken off line. Also the overhead is strung in a " Z " pattern between supports to even out the wear on the pantographs.

The street running in Michigan City does still see freight trains including unit coal trains. All freight on the South Shore is now diesel powered.
