Digital Readout On SP Detectors

I came across a grab-shot of a lineside detector along the SP, and on top of a pole was a large digital display that read back the counted axles of the train. I can't find a pic of it now, but it was Southern Pacific, and probably safe to say it does not exist anymore.

Was this kind of detector readout more common than I thought? I read about modelling one of these in a MR magazine from the '70's, but until now thought they would have existed where shorter trains and denser rail traffic would be...
