If the daily or even casual riders complain about a raise in fares, consider the cost of gasoline to commute to and from and above all parking costs daily in San Francisco for a single person vehicle occupancy. So a fare hike total wouldn't approach parking costs on a daily basis or be that unreasonable. Yeah I know that you can park out in the avenues and catch a bus to down town to avoid parking fees. Then you risk the fact that your car might not be there when you get off work. Those folks aren't among the majority. Carpooling with three or more would be a given to make the commute costs more economical on a daily basis. It still might be cheaper for an individual to take the train. You can't enjoy a six pack going home in a car. Well not leagaly. My vote would be for the fare hike more like a user fee as they are the ones who get the bennefit of the system. One thing is for sure. If they shut it down and pull up the rails, there is no getting it back. Nimby, nimby all the way along the line.
