Firebox designs of the era were either between the drivers, above the driving axles, or above the wheels. Baldwin and other builders offered all three designs. The distance was stretched between the 2nd and 3rd driving axle on #3 to allow the firebox to sit between the axles. Many 2-6-0s of the era were similar, as were most 4-4-0s.
