I just got off the phone with Jack Botfield Jr., son of Jack Sr., the engineer noted by
Brian. It was not Leonard Ames and most likely was Ray Maddox. Jack said he would take
the engine on an 18 mile or so round trip down and back to Beardsley just to turn it on the
balloon there. Part of the paved road on the North side of the Dam is over the steep slope
of the balloon. Another engineer during the '63 season, according to Jack, was Bill
McPherson.
