It depends on the technology being used.

"Sprint" type dmu's and trolleys are Light Rail Vehicles. The FRA does not allow LRV's and heavy rail to operate at the same time. Examples: San Diego Trolley and Oceanside-Escondido Sprinter service run during the day, freight at night, never on the main tracks at the same time.

The Colorado Railcar DMU's and older RDC's are heavy rail, and can run with freight.

The jury is still out on cab cars and dmu's as far as collisions go.
