Amtrak: National Limited from St. Louis to Lewiston, PA in 1973 or 1974. Train was late and very hot arriving in St. Louis. It left hot too in typical muggy August weather. Dining car steward was an ex-Penn Central grump who was more concerned in moving passengers in and out of the diner quickly rather than providing an enjoyable meal. I picked up a distaste for cold tomato consomme from that trip.
Steam: Cotton Belt 819 post-NRHS convention excursion (1990) from East St. Louis to Pine Bluff. The train suffered massive air conditioning failure in most cars. Locomotive blew off its whistle somewhere in northern Arkansas--how did that happen?. Delays ensued as a diesel had to be called to bring us to Pine Bluff. I think we arrived past midnight and then I rode in the back of pick-up truck to Little Rock.
