It was mostly bad timekeeping. June, 1970 I rode the "Coast Daylight" from San Jose to Los Angeles. We were about 1 1/2 hours late arriving LA. I didn't know it at the time but that guaranteed a late departure that night for the "Sunset", which I rode to El Paso. We were nearly two hours late departing LA as that day's #98 became that evening's #2 after servicing and switching. The "Daylight" that day was about 15 cars long and powered by a single SDP45! Food service was the "automat", but there was a 3600-series dome lounge included.
A second story would be from an ex-girlfreind's father who was employed by SP. During the mid 1960's he took the family from Oakland to Los Angeles on the "San Joaquin Daylight" They were on time at every station, but sat at Glendale for some two hours while freight trains passed in both directions, and were very late in to LA.
