Unusual happening at Mt. Shasta City
Remember the Shasta Huffen Puff? It was a tourist operation that ran for a while primarily between McCloud and Mt. Shasta City on the McCloud River RR. During the westbound run over the switchback the train would usually take water at the Howard Tank. On September 4, 1967 there was a problem with the makeup water to the tank and when the train arrived the tank didn't have enough water to fill the tender. This necessitated a call to the SP dispatcher to request permission to use the water column at Mt. Shasta City. Permission was granted and everyone lived happily ever after. This may have been the last time this facility was used. It was maintained to support steam rotary operations and by 1967 the rotaries were close to being converted to electric operation. Anyway, it was a case of being at the right place at the right time and the result was this shot of McCloud engineer Ray Piltz (you can tell by the white engineers cap) filling 25's tender and giving it a good wash job as well.
