As long as 90 years ago, Santa Fe did a feasibility study on a Tejon grade track alignment and concluded it was doable, but impractical. Back then, the issue was a lack of on-line traffic; I am sure today environmental impact reports, seismic issues, and whatnot make such an alignment too risky both from a financial and safety standpoint.

Anyway, in determining a preference for train vs. flying, most people would calculate the portal-to-portal travel time + "hassle factor", not the published schedule between airports or train stations. If the latter were that important, there would be no traffic jams on I-15 leaving Las Vegas on Sunday afternoons.
