It's not just California: one of the most recent trespassing fatalities around Puget Sound involved a couple of high school kids apparently placing coins on one track of the double-track BNSF (and UPRR) Seattle-Portland main, while a freight was going past them just a couple of teet away on the other track. No surprise that they didn't hear the oncoming train that killed one of them. I would guess that kids fooling around or just walking along the tracks must be a problem all over the country.

Common sense seems to be in short supply these days, along with the lost art of critical thinking.
