Since my name was mentioned it is best to hear directly from the source. I purchased John Illman's collection in 2003. I bought it for a number of reasons. John and my father were hired by Shell Development in Emeryville the same month and knew each other for many years. Much of John's collection was Bay Area railroading, which I saw growing up. John's collection meshed well with mine as I began shooting about the time John started winding down his railfanning. John's collection is impeccably organized and cross referenced, including proofs of all the negs. Over the years I have had many requests for John's photos and I have been able to make them available at a reasonable price. John's photos were featured at Winterail when he received the Hall of Fame Award in a show I put together. Also John's work appeared in Classic Trains in "Great Railroad Photographers" series and his work was also featured in a CTC Board magazine feature, both of these were put together by me. I have tried to show case John's work and make it readily available to anyone. I charge the same price for one of John's photos as one from my own photo collection. I would simply like to make everyone aware of the status of John's fine negative collection.
