Susan Slade Rides The Del Monte

I was scanning through some channels on cable TV the other day and stumbled across a movie on TCM called "Susan Slade" which was filmed in 1961. Starring Troy Donahue and Connie Stevens, the syrupy romantic plot was enough to gag a maggot, but it kept my interest because of extensive on-location scenes that included vintage DC-3s, American President Lines cruise ships, San Francisco, and the Monterey peninsula. In one all-too-brief scene shot at the Monterey train station, the main character disembarks off what's supposed to be the "Del Monte" from San Francisco (even though for filming purposes, the train was pulling into the station from the wrong direction). The train had a GP-9 in the Black Widow paint scheme and that fluted lounge car that it carried for many years. It's amazing how much the world has changed since 1961. I wish I could go back! It looks like the film will be shown again on TCM on June 14 at 1515 ET. You might want to turn to volume down to avoid getting involved in the inane plot, but on the plus side there's a lot of visual eye candy.
