When I was there in 1971 (omg it has been 40 years?) I was told by some of the train crews that some of the freights did on line pick-ups and set-outs but that many of the sidings no longer had wire. As such, they were required to reach into sidings with enough cars to keep the locomotives under wire.

One of my bigger mistakes was to never go back to Montana until 2004---and by then, not only the MILW but a lot of other things had vanished.
