Too bad just about everybody travels the way I do... by highway or by airlines.

That's the bottom line for long-haul Amtrak. Do the people want flexible (auto), speed (airlines), or slow and inflexible (Amtrak)?

Good sense has nothing to do with it.

Even most railfans hardly use it. They're traveling by car, taking pictures of trains along the way. (Flexibility.)
