Put someone in office who is bound and determined to start a war and then the taxpayers will have to pay for that act years later. The military and contractors who make money on war don't come cheaply. Voters need to be smarter. Maybe they'll learn next time.
All that money wasted in Iraq could, in fact, be spent on a wide variety of domestic needs. There are many programs needing money that would benefit US citizens even ignoring Amtrak (small change as it is). Still, Amtrak ought to get more funding as should the railroad industry to ease congestion and keep freight and passengers moving. Those transportation matters benefit our society.
Let Halliburton, et al. take charge of domestic infrastructure and their cronies would see to it that money would flow into their pockets. Just as now, except it is not in our own country.
