Cited five times for speeding in a commercial vehicle, three of those in a school bus. In a two year period. WOW !!! Someone @ Cal DMV & CHP really dropped the ball with this guy. No way he should have still been legal to drive; anyways any decent school district will fire a driver for ONE speeding ticket in a bus. Perhaps a contractor such as Laidlaw or Veolia would have been a bit more lenient, but THREE speeding tickets in a school bus in two years should be a career - ender. I also don't believe what the Nevada DMV guy says in the article; a commercial driver cannot just ' settle up his accounts and move on.' I've had a Class A CDL for 30 years and everything I did in California followed me up to Washington. State DMV's have been required to share commercial driving records for many years now, just so a bad driver cannot move to another state & "start over".
No offense to his sister; as quoted in the article she said there must have been a mechanical defect with the equipment. With empty trailers, the driver should have stopped well short of the crossing. Empty trailers will bounce a little bit when you get on the brakes hard, but they will stop, even if half the brakes are out of adjustment. Had the trailers been loaded, ( looks like a 40' & 28' bottom dump combination, legal in NV. ) the Amtrak train would have ended up scattered all over the desert.
